Comparing Our Lives

I really hope the times when we looked at peoples pages on social media and thought “Wow…Their life must be so perfect…lucky them” are behind us. But in case they are not, I’m writing this post.

For a while Instagrammers have made it a point to highlight “real moments” so others can see that no ones life is perfect. However, not everyone might feel comfortable sharing ALL their “real moments” and that’s perfectly fine. No one has to. Social media is a free space where we share what we want, as much or as little as we want.

Instagram is mainly a highlight of the best moments in our lives so its easy for anyone to think peoples lives must be great if all they see are just the best moments or carefully crafted pictures.

Most people (myself included) will hardly ever post their darkest moments on social media. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist. It doesn’t matter how “nice” peoples lives look online….to walk in their shoes is probably a challenge most people would not be up for. And you would never know what people are going through from their pictures.

I have posted pictures where I’m smiling before going to a Taylor swift concert and then Six Flags the next day…but I was secretly dying on the inside. There are things I’ve gone through that are so tough it felt like somebody needed to hold me up. But a lot of us “tough it out” because we have to. I don’t know how to be any other way so I smile. There’s other people out there who are “comedians”: always making jokes, and never serious and its said they are some of the saddest people… but you would never know it. The same applies with Instagram. No ones life is perfect no matter how “perfect” it looks or how happy they seem. ANYONE can say “cheese” for a picture.

I have gone through so much my whole life. I’m still wondering when it’ll get easier LOL. It doesn’t ever seem to get easier. I still have a positive out look on life though. If you have a negative mind, you will have a negative life. If you have a positive mind, you will have a positive life.

A positive life doesn’t mean you have zero problems. It means you will have more joy and happiness because you are giving love and happiness to others. “What you sow you will reap” as they bible says.

This life tests everyone, and no one is exempt from unexpected situations, sickness, death, financial loss, problematic people, ect. Problems happen to the whole world. People are most likely not going to share the turmoil they are going through with you, but don’t let nice pictures ever make you feel bad about your own life. Someone could look like they live “The charmed life” but you really don’t know the size of their problems or what they truly are going through.

I’m an open book (as a lot of you guys have probably noticed lol) and I don’t mind sharing details of my life, and I wish I could say more about what I’ve gone through to help others, but for the privacy of other people I keep details to a minimum. All I will say is my life literally feels like a show that has many many ongoing seasons. I did not ask to be a character in this show but you don’t always get what you want. So I just go with it.

There might be the exception of someone out there who truly has an easy life…I don’t really know anyone like this but maybe there are people out there who do have it all, and have no problems in their life. Like Marie Antoinette.. her biggest problem was choosing between a slice of lemon cake or the decadent macaron before a leisurely afternoon nap. Then again, her life changed drastically within time. The same is true for anyone. No one has anything promised.

So if you ever think “Other people seem to have it better than me..” Just remember: No matter what kind of shoes we have on (whether they are Gucci or Payless) no matter what kind of house we live in, or what kind of life it looks like we have…WE ALL HAVE PROBLEMS. Giant problems sometimes.

Something that really helps me though when I have problems the size of the universe is PRAYING. When I pray, I feel more calm and at peace despite the amount and size of my problems. I think a lot of times we want to do things ourselves. The reality is Jehovah God can make things so much easier and better for us than what we can do ourselves.

One of my favorite verses is Isaiah 43:19 “Behold, I am doing something new! It’s already happening; don’t you recognize it? I will clear a way in the desert. I will make rivers on dry land.”  How powerful is that?? He can do ANYTHING even when it seems impossible.

These are a couple of others that are my favorite when going through tough times:

“God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for Jehovah your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Just remember, you are not alone with your problems. They come and go in waves sometimes but prayer is powerful in helping us overcome them.

And Oh yea….pictures are just pictures 😉
